Struggling to Find Mental Health Support for Your Child?

Is Your Child Finding Their Feelings Hard to Handle?

  • Worry or anxiety they can’t quite put into words.
  • Big feelings or behaviour that boil over — at home, at preschool, or with friends.
  • Trouble making or keeping friends, and sadness when it doesn’t go well.
  • Low mood or stress that’s starting to affect everyday life.
  • A sense that things are building up, and you’re not sure where to turn.

Are you worried about these things but feel overwhelmed by the barriers to getting help? The STAR4-Kids program understands and is here to support you and your child with accessible mental health care.

We believe every child deserves the chance to feel understood — no matter what they’re facing.

Supporting Young Minds: The STAR4-Kids Program

The STAR4-Kids Program offers free psychological support for children aged 3 to 12 who are experiencing, or at risk of, mild to moderate difficulties such as anxiety, low mood or stress. It’s designed for families who find it hard to access Better Access (Medicare) services.

Eligible participants must live within the South Western Sydney (PHN) region. This covers several local government areas and their postcodes, including Fairfield, Liverpool, and the former Bankstown (now part of Canterbury-Bankstown).

The program provides up to 12 hours of free psychological support with a qualified mental health professional experienced in working with children.

The service is available to: Children who face barriers to accessing support through the Medicare Better Access initiative, and whose families are:

  • experiencing financial hardship (as a guide, self-assessed against Services Australia criteria: a low income of less than $1,349 per couple per week with one dependent child, or $1,315 per single parent per week with one dependent child, plus an additional $34 per week per child — or current difficulty meeting basic needs due to financial constraints)
  • identify as CALD, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or
  • do not speak English at home

This service isn’t available for:

  • children whose families do not face barriers to accessing support through the Medicare Better Access initiative
  • children whose main presenting concern is a diagnosed developmental or behavioural condition
  • children who already receive funded psychology support through another program such as the NDIS

Here's How It Works

Step 1:

Book Your Child's Appointment

Arrange a supportive first session with our caring psychologists to understand your child's strengths and where they need a hand. It's a chance to get real insight into how your child is feeling.

Step 2:

Crafting Your Child's Personal Plan

After that first chat, we put together a simple plan built around your child's needs — using what we've learned to help build their confidence and coping skills, with a kind and thoughtful approach.

Step 3:

Supporting Your Child's Growth

As your child works through their plan, we aim to help them build confidence and coping skills at their own pace, so everyday ups and downs feel a little more manageable.
